| When you're dealing with ants you must first identify the species. Knowing the species is critical so that you can know for sure whether or not you can deal with it yourself. You can find many over the counter products at your local store to deal with this one. The odorous house ant species is probably one of the ants that you might want to consider calling a professional when you encounter them. This is because of the size of the colonies, and they have multi queens with multi colonies, and they can spread fast if treated improperly. Carpenter ants can be treated yourself some of the time. The best way to know if you need to call a professional is when you see them inside your house. You can kill them outside yourself, but once they get inside they will set up a satellite colony and will travel back and forth to the main colony outside the home and back and forth inside the home. This is when you really need professional help in controlling them long term or erradicating the colony inside the structure.
