Cygnet Productions, Inc., a non-profit theatre, was formed in Portland in 1992 by Louanne Moldovan and Nyla McCarthy. Its goal was to annually produce a full season of plays and staged readings, using material derived from diverse forms of literature: books, letters, short stories, epic poems any source at all the only caveat was quality. Given Cygnet's focus on the written word and the performance aspect, the company was labeled a "literary cabaret." Over the years, Cygnet has given theatrical voices to authors as diverse as Ursula LeGuin, Bertoldt Brecht, David Sedaris, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, John Cheever, Dorothy Parker, Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Bukowski.
